Research summary
Many children have fractures during childhood. Some children have abnormalities in how their skeleton grows. We have to try and work out which children have underlying abnormalities with their hormones (chemical signals) that tell bone how to grow. In order to do this we take blood tests to measure hormone levels.
For some hormones we do not know what the normal levels are throughout childhood. This makes it very difficult to work out which children have underlying problems with their hormones.
The purpose of this study is to collect blood samples for bone hormones (parathyroid hormone, 1,25 vitamin D, inorganic pyrophosphate, pyridoxal-5’-phosphate and phosphoethanolamine) from healthy children aged 0-18 years to define what the normal levels of these bone hormones are. This will help us to improve our care for children with abnormal bone health in the future.
