TITLE:Does paediatric maladaptive perfectionism mediate the association between parenting factors and paediatric anxiety?
BACKGROUND TO THE RESEARCH: While there is ample evidence linking parent anxiety to child anxiety, there has been little focus on what factors may mediate this association. Identifying such factors would be of significant clinical benefit, particularly for identifying ways we may improve the treatment of child anxiety. A recent review (Morris & Lomax, 2014) suggested that child perfectionism may mediate an association between parenting factors and child anxiety. However, this model is yet to be empirically tested. This research aims to add to the literature by measuring perfectionism, anxiety and parenting style in parents and children and assessing if child maladaptive perfectionism explains the association between parenting factors and child anxiety.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional questionnaire design; participants aged 12-16 with anxiety will be recruited from community child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) via their CAMHS clinician. A comparison sample aged 12-16yrs will also be recruited from Bristol Grammar School via an e-newsletter. Participants will be given information about the study so that they can give informed consent if they choose to take part. If they wish to take part the parent and their child will be asked to complete online questionnaires related to perfectionism, anxiety and parenting style. Questionnaire data will be anonymised by the primary researcher and analysed to assess if child perfectionism explains some of the association between parenting factors and child anxiety.
FUNDING: Bath University will be funding the research, which Rochelle Barden will be completing as part of her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology Thesis.
RECRUITMENT: A clinical sample of 42 children aged 12-16 with anxiety and their parent, will be recruited from North Bristol NHS Trust CAMHS teams. A community sample of 42 children aged 12-16 and their parent will be recruited from Bristol Grammar School.
