  • Research summary

Early palliative intervention for patients with advanced lung cancer can lead to less aggressive care and potentially longer survival. However, there is evidence that some patients with lung cancer continue to receive aggressive treatments when approaching the end of life, when palliative care might be a more beneficial and realistic option for them. Patients should be offered the opportunity to take part in discussions about their treatment. Whatever treatment options are taken, patients should be fully informed about any potential risks and benefits.

The aim of this study is to look at the information patients may need when considering treatment options for lung cancer and any support they may require when reaching decision making. There are several stages to this study.

    1. Multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, held by clinicians responsible for the care of lung cancer patients, will be observed to see how clinicians decide which treatment options to recommend to patients.

    2. Consultations between patients and clinicians will be observed and assessed by the research team to see how treatment options and information about treatment options are given to patients. The extent to which they are involved in decisions about which treatments they will receive will also be observed

    3. Patients and clinicians will also be spoken to, separately, in face to face interviews. This is in order to explore their views on the available treatment options and understand how much patients are included in discussions and decisions about their treatment.

We will use the data from each of the stages to identify areas where patients and clinicians may benefit from information and/or support to help them discuss and decide on treatment options. We hope to design an intervention that patients and clinicians can use in their consultations to support them when having these conversations.
