  • Data collection arrangements

Biobank materials include a variety of diseased tissue, healthy tissue, or body fluids and related data collected from patients attending the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and other sites for use in biomedical research. They may also be from healthy volunteers. Samples will be stored at multiple University of Oxford locations at the John Radcliffe hospital and Churchill hospital sites, and in the Department of Pharmacology (University of Oxford).
Consent may be broad or specific depending on whether the samples were collected by the biobank, for a specific research project or were collected as tissue surplus to diagnostic requirement and subsequently put into the biobank. Certain sub-collections may include samples taken without explicit consent (because this was approved by a REC or samples are 'existing holdings', i.e. taken pre-1st Sept 2016). Anonymised samples or data can be made available for ethically approved research. The biobank focuses building high quality collections of human material and data, driven by research requirements. The biobank maintains compliance with regulatory (legal and ethical) requirements and operational "best practice" to ensure best use of samples and data.

  • Research programme

ORB supports a wide variety of ongoing, collaborative, research programmes that aim to improve patient care and develop new clinical tools and therapies. The programmes are funded by competitive grants awarded by the major funding bodies under independent scientific peer review. This ensures the work is of high scientific quality and clinical value. Applications are welcome for studies in all areas of biomedical research but where samples are limited, priority will be given to research directly related to the original purpose of the collection. To ensure that best use is made of a limited resource, access to a subcollection of ORB may be limited to requestors affiliated to the University of Oxford or the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUH) and research led or endorsed by contributing investigators or, those (including from external institutions and/or commercial companies) willing to pursue the research in collaboration with the custodian’s group. Affiliation of the requestor to the Oxford University or OUH will help to ensure adequate oversight and compliance with approvals, legislation and to ensure real accountability in the event of non-compliance. Samples may also be shared with external institutions collaborating with Oxford-based researchers or, more rarely, with commercial companies.
