Research summary
We have three main research questions:
1. Can the QualityWatch metrics be used to explore variations in clinical quality and performance across healthcare providers and to identify a clinical service area or speciality where we observe a large magnitude of unexplained variation, with substantial numbers of service providers at the extremes of “high” and “low” performance?
2. Can we measure – qualitatively and quantitatively – the “improvement capability” of clinical service area/specialties, and do we find an association between capability and clinical quality and performance? What quantitative and qualitative differences in improvement capability exist between “high” and “low” performance providers, and between providers who have “rising” or “falling” performance trajectories?
3. What plausible causative mechanisms exist which could explain the patterns of improvement capability and clinical quality and performance observed, and do they suggest some promising approaches which could be used in driving and sustaining quality improvement?WP1 – review of available QualityWatch metrics and other performance measure datasets and identification of clinical service area/specialty for fieldwork.
WP2 – case study investigation of improvement capability in clinical service providers in a chosen clinical service area.
WP3 – exploratory survey of improvement capability in clinical service providers in a chosen clinical service area.
