  • Research summary

The main purpose of this clinical study is to test whether the use of a connected toothbrush and associated smartphone application (providing both coaching and feedback) improves oral health over a 6-week period.
120 adult participants will be recruited from an NHS dental practice setting and will be randomised into two groups: one group (n=60) will be asked to use the smartphone app every time they brush for the duration of the study and to follow the personalised guidance it provides, whilst the other group (n=60) will use the same toothbrush but without any connected features. Their brushing metrics will, however, be collected.
To determine whether the brush & app help to improve oral hygiene, dental plaque and signs of early gum disease (swelling & redness; gingivitis) will be recorded for all participants at the start and end of the study. In addition, all participants will be asked to complete focussed questionnaires to provide general feedback on their experience.
