Research summary
Multimodal prehabilitation aims to prepare patients for cancer treatment through physical activity, nutrition and psychological support. Previous literature in surgical oncology populations, predominantly colorectal cancer, has shown that multimodal prehabilitation can improve functional capacity and enhance functional recovery after surgery when compared to standard hospital care. This study aims to assess patients likes and dislikes as well as suggestions for the current prehabilitation programme. It will consist of qualitative interviews (~10 cancer patients and family/friend dyads) with colorectal and gynaecological cancer patients undergoing elective surgery and their key family members. Interviews will be conducted with both the cancer patient and family member present at the same interview as the purpose is to ensure the intervention is acceptable to both. The sampling frame for this study will be generated from those patients enrolled in the prehabilitation programme at the Apple Clinic, at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Paisley. Patients currently enrolled or who have been enrolled within the last year are suitable. The physical activity lead and the physical activity facilitator of the Apple Clinic at the Royal Alexandra Hospital will identify people suitable for participation. Patients identified by the physical activity lead and facilitator will be provided with the invitation letter and participant information sheet. Patients will be made aware that they will receive a 20-pound gift card as an incentive and token of appreciation after the interview is conducted. If interested, patiets will be introduced to the PhD student, s Clara Kurtidu who will conduct the interviews. Interviews will be recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using Thematic Analysis and 20% will be double-coded to ensure the reliability of coding.
