Research summary
Post mortem imaging in children is rapidly becoming the standard of care, but is in its early stages and cannot currently be offered to all parents.
Great Ormond Street Hospital and ICH have just completed the world’s largest RCT into post mortem imaging, which has highlighted that further work needs to be done to improve imaging in this context. GOSH and ICH are supported by NIHR as part of the Biomedical Research Centre, and we are currently establishing a national reference centre for minimally invasive autopsy in children.
This project is part of a £1,000,000 grant from NIHR to establish Dr Owen Arthurs as the national lead for post mortem imaging in children. This project has already undergone extensive peer review and approval by NIHR, who only fund important, highly ethically acceptable studies in principle. Together with several patient support groups, we have wide support for our efforts to offer post mortem imaging to a wider audience.
This specific ethical application will address the further development of imaging in order to provide the best possible care for parents. It does not involve tissue sampling or organ retention.
