  • Research summary

    Patient-reported outcome (PRO) data can enhance patient care and outcomes; inform commissioning and redesign of health services; and enrich national audits and research. However, collecting PRO data as part of usual care pathways is only feasible and sustainable if done electronically and with support from patients, healthcare professionals and commissioners.

    The Optimising routine collection of electronic patient-reported outcomes (OPT-ePRO) project aims to develop, implement and refine an intervention to engage patients, healthcare professionals and commissioners in routine collection of electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePROs). We will do this in the context of the national audit of renal services in secondary care in the UK, which is coordinated by the UK Renal Registry.

    Our research objectives are to:
    1. Develop an intervention to optimise engagement in ePROs as part of usual care in renal services, i.e. the OPT-ePRO intervention;
    2. Implement, evaluate and further refine the OPT-ePRO intervention in routine practice settings;
    3. Explore views of NHS commissioners on drivers and requirements for using PROs to assess services for people with long-term conditions.

    For objective 1, we will conduct observations of workflows and audio-recording of clinic consultations in renal units, and organise participatory co-design workshops with patients and healthcare professionals. Findings will increase our understanding of how to embed ePROs in routine renal care, and inform the development of the OPT-ePRO intervention.

    For objective 2, we will implement the OPT-ePRO intervention across three renal units, and iteratively refine it to engage a broad range of patients in ePROs. We will monitor ePRO response rates and conduct embedded qualitative research to identify issues and address them as they arise.

    For objective 3, we will interview NHS commissioners.

    Ultimately, we expect the findings from the project to support other UK renal units with incorporating routine ePRO collection into their service.
