Research summary
Myasthenia gravis (MG) is caused by a disorder at connection between nerves and muscles (the neuromuscular junction), resulting in fluctuating weakness. If this remains limited to the eyes, it is termed ocular myasthenia gravis (OMG). If weakness develops elsewhere it is termed generalised myasthenia gravis (GMG). GMG is a more serious condition which can be life threatening. 30-85% of OMG convertes to GMG within the first year of onset. It is not known which patients will convert from OMG to GMG.
We would like to investigate the predictive factors at onset of disease that may influence the risk of conversion from OMG to GMG. We would also like to determine the factors at onset of disease that may predict a poor treatment outcome with regards to symptoms. With the results obtained, we would like to create a model for predicting disease prognosis which will enable choice of the most appropriate therapy.
