Research summary
Obesity is now ranked as the fifth leading cause for global deaths, mainly due to complications within the blood vessels of our body. It is possible that bariatric surgery (stomach band) or diet, through their effect on weight, improve vessel dilation function and decrease the risk for cardiovascular (vessel) disease in obese patients. In addition, obesity may also result in eye health problems such as irritation and dry eye. However, the effects of weight loss to the benefit of eye health have not been studied. This study aims to demonstrate that significant weight loss results in a decreased risk for blood vessel and eye health diseases in obese patients. Testing will include special measurements of the eye and of the blood vessels before and after the participant undergoes bariatric surgery (stomach band).
