Research summary
A study exploring patients’ experiences of receiving occupational therapy as part of a back pain management programme.
Occupational therapists may be part of the team of professionals working on pain management programmes for people with chronic pain. However, there has been little research into the benefits of having an occupational therapist as part of the team and some teams don’t include them.
This study aims to explore what patients feel about having occupational therapy as part of the pain management programme, how they have found the occupational therapy parts of the programme and how those parts have influenced any changes patients have made to how they approach their activities of daily living. It is hoped that this study will contribute to discussions about the inclusion of occupational therapists on pain management programme teams, and will be helpful to occupational therapists planning treatment for patients with chronic pain.
Interviews will be carried out with patients who are coming to the end of a back pain management programme which has included occupational therapy. Patients will be asked if they wish to volunteer. The interviews will take place at the hospital where the patients attended the programme, on one occasion, either before or after one of the last three days of the programme. The interviews will last about an hour and will take place with one patient at a time. The study will ask for volunteers from 2 or 3 programmes and interview 5-10 patients in total.
With the patients’ permission, the interviews will be recorded then typed up with any information which might make the patient identifiable being changed. Patients’ thoughts about the occupational therapy they received will then be looked at in detail and a summary will be written of the main points.REC name
