Research summary
The aim of this research study is to explore how effective occupational therapy is in enabling individuals living in the community with a diagnosis of depression to improve their function and participate meaningfully in their everyday lives. The location for this research study will be Community Mental Health Team’s within a NHS Trust in the north of England.
The study will use a mixed methods approach to measure and evaluate participants’ level of occupational functioning and participation in everyday activities before and after occupational therapy intervention and 3 months following completion of the intervention. The qualitative arm of this study will be conducted through a one-group pretest-posttest design and the qualitative component will explore the participants’ perceptions, direct experience, and impact of the occupational therapy intervention through semi-structured interviews and time-use diaries with a particular focus on participants’ perceptions of the effectiveness of occupational therapy in relation to their recovery.
This research will seek to provide new and original knowledge and to further develop the evidence base for occupational therapy in mental health, in an area where research is particularly limited. It will seek to provide new evidence to support best practice and the overall care and treatment of people with depression.
