Research summary
In patients taking bisphosphonates (BPs), a group of drugs used worldwide to treat osteoporosis and bone cancer, there is the risk of developing a side effect in the jaw, more commonly known as MRONJ. Sections of the jawbone in MRONJ patients die, and the gum above the bone also dies, leaving the dead bone exposed. This exposed, dead bone is usually infected. Currently there is no cure for MRONJ and a well-defined method for treatment is not available. MRONJ causes significant issues in eating and speaking for patients who already have difficult diseases to manage.\n\nIn order to design a novel treatment for MRONJ, we need to further understand how the disease develops. This project will take clinical samples of the infection found in MRONJ patients, and analyse this to determine which bacterial species are present. Through this, we will be able to develop a method of treating this infection which is able to target the most common species.
