Research summary
This study aims to understand lung cancer in never-smokers (LCINS) and improve the early detection and management of these patients.
Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in the United Kingdom (UK). Although it is typically associated with smoking, more than a quarter of adults diagnosed with lung cancer have never smoked. Such individuals may have different risk factors, symptoms and so on. However, compared to people who have smoked, there are no specific ways to improve the diagnosis of lung cancer in never-smokers. Understanding more about LCINS may help contribute to earlier diagnosis and reduce the number of people dying from this disease.
The people who take part in this study will not have any changes made to their usual clinical care. Instead, most of the data will come from their primary and secondary care electronic health records. Data that will be collected includes what symptoms people had before their diagnosis, possible risk factors such as other medical problems, and what happens to them after they get diagnosed. Other things which may be related to LCINS, such as pollution data, may also be measured.
People who have never smoked and who have been diagnosed or treated with lung cancer at hospitals which are part of the study will be invited to join this study.
Although people are not expected to directly benefit as a result of participating in this study, they may benefit from knowing they will contribute to research that may help to improve the understanding and diagnosis of lung cancer in never-smokers like them.REC name
