Data collection arrangements
This study aims to evaluate the relationship between obesity and inflammation and assess the impact of bariatric surgery on these parameters. The study population of this research project includes patients who have undergone a bariatric procedure at either Whittington Health NHS Trust or North Bristol NHS Trust. The data included in the study are: demographic, preoperative, operative data, post-operative data, pathology, weight, and follow up data.
All identifiable information will be anonymised prior to storage in password-locked NHS computers. Only members of
the research team will have access to these stored data.Research programme
This study will use the data generated from this research database to evaluate the relationship between obesity and inflammation and assess the impact of bariatric surgery on these parameters. We will retrospectively review inflammatory markers in obese patients who have undergone bariatric surgery and assess if this level of inflammation is then influenced by the bariatric procedure and resultant weight loss. Evidence exists that maintenance of skeletal muscle and a normal body mass index (BMI) leads to a better outcome and prognosis in colorectal cancer. The data collated for the research database will be further analysed to investigate changes in inflammation associated with weight loss. Addressing the body’s inflammatory response to illness is thought to key in tackling muscle wasting. Therefore, by looking at ways of tackling obesity and inflammation we hope to transfer this knowledge to the management of obese patients with colorectal cancer.
