Research summary
Oral symptoms are common in patients with advanced cancer and are significant cause of morbidity. A number of small studies have be carried out but these studies have been narrow in focus e.g. not covering all symptoms and conducted at a single site, hence the true prevalence of oral symptoms remain to be determined in patients with advanced cancer.
The un-determined prevalence of oral symptoms and their effect on patient’s well-being is probably related to 'inadequate oral assessment' and perception by health care professional and patients that oral symptoms are not important.
The purpose of this multi-centre study is to determine the prevalence of range of oral symptoms in patients with advanced cancer and to use this information to develop and validate an oral assessment tool.
This study is also the inaugural study of the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Palliative Care Research Group.
