Research summary
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a chronic relapsing disease associated with high morbidity, mortality and considerable health care cost. The impact of IBD on patients' quality of life is substantial and impaired nutrition is one of the major complications of IBD leading to adverse clinical outcomes.
The objective of this study is to describe the nutritional status, health related quality of life and associated factors among patients with inflammatory bowel disease in gastroenterology out-patient clinics, in Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kings Lynn, an IBD service providing centre in the United Kingdom.
This will be a descriptive cross-sectional study with 116 voluntary participants enrolled from gastroenterology clinic admissions from December 2023 onwards using consecutive sampling method until the sample size is achieved.Patients bellow 18 years, pregnant, critically ill or having impaired cognitive functions will be excluded from the study. Anthropometric measurement will be taken for nutritional assessment and questionnaire will be used. Health related quality of life will be assessed using SIBDQ(Short IBD Questionnaire), which is a validated questionnaire. The total duration will be 20 minutes while in the waiting area for the consultations. Any blood tests will not be done for the study and available routine bio chemical investigation data will be extracted from the data systems.
The research study will be done adhered to highest ethical standards.
This study has no risks or hazards for the participants. Anonymity and confidentiality will be maintained throughout the study. There are no conflicts of interests in any means in this research including financial, commercial, intellectual or in any other. The project will be a self-funded and the investigators have no commercial/financial interest regarding the outcome of the research.
The result will be published in an indexed journal related to IBD to transfer the acquired knowledge for the benefit of patients.REC name
