Research summary
There is national and international interest in how we can better prepare cancer patients for their treatment. During surgical procedures there is evidence that a structured programme of care known as Enhanced Recovery After Surgery is beneficial in improving recovery and reducing complications, of which nutrition and metabolism plays an integral part.
Part of this programme includes the physical optimisation of patients before they undergo their treatment. This is known as prehabilitation.
Due to the often aggressive nature of haematological malignancies and the fact that haematological stem cell therapy (HSCT) is a second line treatment, patients will have undergone significant interventions before treatment. Understanding if there is opportunity to optimise a person before HSCT and what nutrition and metabolic components could be included is an important consideration. Especially in an era of personalised care how can we adapt interventions to peoples risks or other illnesses i.e. obesity, diabetes, malnutrition.
This single survey study aims to explore health care professional perceptions of potential prehabilitation programmes in HSCT. The role of nutrition in one of these programmes and the extent to which nutritional & metabolic risk factors are currently assessed and managed prior to adults undergoing HSCT in UK and ROI
