Research summary
Patients with kidney failure are treated by dialysis. Unlike the healthy kidney which excretes waste products but retains essential nutrients, dialysis is unselective. If solutes are small enough to be removed by dialysis they will be removed.
This will lead to potential nutritional losses. Proteins contain nitrogen. We wish to measure the amount of nitrogen lost in the waste dialysate to measure the losses of nitrogenous compounds and other nutrients in patients treated by dialysis. Patients with chronic kidney disease are at greater risk of malnutrition and muscle loss , often termed sarcopenia. To provide tailored dietary advice we need to better understand nutritional losses in kidney failure patients.REC name
