Research summary
Crohn’s disease is a chronic disease of the gut characterised by acute episodes of inflammation. Patients can experience a variety of nutritional deficiencies including protein energy undernutrition and vitamin and mineral deficiencies, even during periods of remission.
Those at risk of undernutrition will be invited to participate in a feasibility study comparing dietary counselling to standardised written information in managing undernutrition. The feasibility study will allow methodology, study design and outcome measures to be tested and a key outcome will be to measure patients’ perceptions of the interventions, design and outcomes. This will provide essential information to inform the design of an adequately powered multi-centre trial of oral nutritional support.
