Research summary
The Covid 19 pandemic has increased the already very high stress to which frontline NHS staff are subjected. It is well known that mental balance and a healthy brain provide the most important resistance to such stress, and that an adequate supply of essential nutrients is crucial for the brain to function optimally. But frontline staff tend to eat bad food, not conducive to brain health, snatching tasty, high calorie, highly processed, but nutrient poor, snacks, in the rare moments they have to eat. There is now much evidence that providing supplements of the nutrients essential for brain health to those whose diet is poor can greatly improve their mental function.
Therefore in this before and after audit pilot study, we aim to provide highly stressed frontline NHS staff with daily supplement capsules containing omega 3s, vitamins and minerals for 3 months, to find out whether these will help them to increase their resilience. Before and after the supplementation we will assess by questionnaires the state of their mental health, their feelings of resilience and general well being.REC name
