Research summary
Connective tissue diseases (CTDs) are a group of conditions, which can affect the joints, skin, kidneys, lung and blood vessels. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and myositis are examples of CTDs, and patients presenting with an overlap of these conditions have been increasingly described. Not many of these patients have been studied. We see an important need to look at children in our research, who have more aggressive disease than adults. Some of these children may also experience side effects of being on long-term medication. We plan to look at markers in the blood controlling the balance between cell death and survival and keeping our organs healthy. In some people, these markers can be abnormal and this may cause CTD. We would like to compare how these markers are different in health and disease, so that we can understand how make treatments better for children with CTD.
