Research summary
This project aims to explore the reasons why patients with type 1 diabetes have not attended structured education. The effect of non-attendance will also be assessed against their perceived ability to self-manage their condition.
It is well reported that structured education provides the foundation for supporting diabetes self-management in order to reduce mortality, diabetes-related complications and improve quality of life. However, despite these known benefits; the National Diabetes Audit (2016-17) reported that only 6 % of patients who had been offered structured education had attended. Since November 2013 Stockport NHS Foundation Trust has offered structured education for patients with type 1 diabetes named “SOCCER”.
Potential participants are those attending speciality diabetes clinics at Stepping Hill Hospital over a two month period and any patients who have been admitted to Stepping Hill Hospital from January 2013 to December 2016 with type 1 diabetes as their primary diagnosis or those who have been referred to Consultant lead diabetes clinics at Stepping Hill Hospital from April 2014 to April 2016. They will be asked to complete a questionnaire exploring their reasons for non-attendance and their perceived ability to manage their condition while attending outpatient clinics or in a given timeline if they receive their questionnaire by post.
Participants must be registered with a GP in Stockport, be over the age of 18, be appropriate for group education, have a confirmed diagnosis of type 1 diabetes and not managed by insulin pump therapy to be eligible.
