  • Data collection arrangements

This postmortem tissue resource is proposed to address the increasing requirement for suitable human tissue for research purposes, in particular to allow retrieval of whole organs to permit macro dissection of samples for individual research studies.
The type of organs and tissue collected will be directed by independant, project specific ethics applications and the wishes of the donor given in life. This may include, but would not be limited to:
whole brain and spinal cord in studies on neurological disease, such as dementia, brain injury or stroke coronary arteries in studies in cardiovascular disease, such as post stent coronary artery response
prostate gland in studies on urological malignancy.
Samples of tissue collected may be:
    1) fixed in formalin, then processed to paraffin blocks prior to storage
    2) snap frozen and stored in low temperature storage facility
The stored samples may have further processing prior to long term storage, which may include:
    1) extraction of DNA, protein and RNA
    2) production of a tissue microarray (TMA)
Subject to any restrictions from the patient registration process and authorisation for autopsy examination, the postmortem
examination will proceed either at the Central Mortuary Facility of the Southern General Hospital or, if supported, the nearest mortuary to the deceased. During this examination, tissue samples and other biological material will be collected as directed by project specific requirements and would be anticipated to cover an extensive
range of sampling including material from all major biological systems.
The acquisition, processing, storage and use of samples will be within the governance of NHSGGC Biorepository.
The Biorepository has Scottish Tissue Bank Accreditation awarded by Health Improvement Scotland in August 2013
