Data collection arrangements
Newcastle Brain Tissue Resource is a research tissue bank collecting brain, spinal cord and other samples from donors with dementia, neurodegenerative, neurological and psychiatric disease and unaffected controls. The majority of tissue is collected post mortem with consent being obtained during the participants lifetime. Potential donors register for eventual donation and are also asked to agree to regular assessment of their mental funtioning and optional blood or CSF samples. Many participants are already involved in research but volunteer donors may also be accepted on to the register.
Research programme
The bank is open access with anonymised samples provided to any applicants from the research community who can demonstrate to the NBTR committee that they have a scientifically and ethically valid project and the funding to carry it out. Samples are provided to both academic and commercial researchers within and outside the UK. Potential donors are able to opt out of uses of the tissue with which they do not feel comfortable and these opt outs are respected when samples are supplied.
