Research programme
[COVID-19 amendment – 14/04/2020]\ The Newcastle Biobank has been supporting a collection of samples from severe viral, inflammatory and/or respiratory disease, which would include patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19. This collection will support a number of urgent studies into the pathobiology of COVID-19. The BioBank ethics is well place to allow rapid utilisation of biological samples from this patient group, however the current ethical approval requires an amendment with respect to the consent procedures to allow recruitment of incapacitated patients admitted to intensive care units. We do not plan to undertake intrusive research on this subset of patients. The only samples that will be taken from the patients will be blood (which will be processed to serum, DNA, RNA, PBMC) urine, swabs and sputum or other respiratory tract secretion, such as tracheal aspirate or bronchoalveolar lavage. We propose to add an additional consent procedure and include in this amendment a Consultee Information Sheet, Personal Consultee assent and Nominated Consultee assent forms. By virtue of the severity of these illnesses patients will often be unable to provide consent for themselves, for example due to sedation and incubation in intensive care.
