  • Research summary

Neutrophil hyper-activity and hyper-reactivity have been demonstrated to be important in the pathogenesis of periodontitis. Periodontitis is a significant risk factor for peri-implantitis and the diseases are frequently compared, however the nature of the acute inflammatory cell content in peri-implantitis associated tissues has been demonstrated to differ. In particular neutrophils are found in relatively greater numbers and are distributed differently in peri-implantitis lesions. We plan to study peripheral neutrophils from patients in health, exhibiting peri-implant mucositis and exhibiting peri-implantitis in terms of their activity and reactivity (ROS release, priming potentials, chemotactic behaviour).
