Research summary
The Royal Hallamshire Hospital (Sheffield, UK) is a specialist centre for the treatment of patients with gluten sensitivity which has affected their brain, and cares for approximately 500 such patients in the Neurology department. Routinely-collected clinical data for these includes markers of gluten-free diet adherence, as well as brain MRI scans. Most of these patients have attended many clinic appointments over time, meaning that multiple MRI scans etc. are available over a period of years. Also at the same hospital is a second clinic in the Gastroenterology department which cares for patients with coeliac disease (who may or may not have any associated neurological problems). Clinical data (although not brain imaging) will similarly have already been collected for these patients.
This study will investigate already-acquired data, and combine it with newly-acquired data concerning cognitive testing and quality of life (measured from questionnaires), in order to study progression of neurological problems over time in these patients, and if this progression is halted when patients follow their gluten-free diet strictly.
