    This study will explore the needs of first time fathers during labour and birth. The study will focus on the following areas:
    AIMS:
    1. How do first time fathers prepare for fatherhood.
    2. Explore how first time fathers engage with health care services during pregnancy, labour and birth.
    3. Understand midwives perceptions of the needs of first time fathers.
    OBJECTIVES:
    1. To identify the emerging roles that first time fathers take on during labour and the birth of their child.
    2. To determine first time fathers expectations and their experience of support mechanisms available to them.
    3. To determine how maternity services address first time fathers needs and to consider any differences in socioeconomic factors.
    4. To utilise the findings to make recommendations to the stakeholders on the improvement of first time fathers experience during labour and birth.
