Research summary
North East England has higher than average cardio vascular disease risk factors such as an irregular pulse (atrial fibrillation (AF)), high blood pressure and cholesterol and are more likely to smoke tobacco but people living in this area are less likely to visit their GP for an NHS health check, for various reasons. Previous research suggests place based interventions (health care delivered in the places in which people live, work and socialise) may help reach people who are most at risk of these conditions.
This study will be delivered in post codes of high deprivation across North East England. Using a non-emergency ambulance the ambulance research team will visit areas of high footfall (shopping precincts, travel hubs etc) and make an offer of a health MOT to individuals aged ≥40 with capacity. The health MOT is a pulse check for AF, blood pressure check, cholesterol check using a point of care device and an offer of stop smoking support. Participants with any observation outside NHS recommendations will receive a direct telephone GP referral by the research team and will be asked to self present to their GP. Individuals who smoke tobacco and who agree will receive a referral to their local NHS Stop Smoking team. We will collect outcome at 60 days from GPs and 28 days from the smoking team. We will ring participants who haven’t seen their GP/or drop out of smoking cessation to try and understand the barriers preventing them from doing so. Participants are members of the public in non-healthcare settings and will provide written informed consent prior to participation.
