Research summary
Research Summary
Neuroinflammatory diseases are a group of disorders such as multiple sclerosis, autoimmune encephalitis, neuromyelitis optica which can be very disabling in the individuals who suffer from these conditions. Neurologists normally manage and treat these disorders according to the effect on physical health: such as changes in vision, effect on movements, co-ordination, sensation and seizures. However there is evidence for most of the neuroinflammatory disease that these may also effect cognitive processes such as memory, understanding and learning and emotional wellbeing. For the most part these have not been investigated systematically, nor has it been investigated whether the different neuroinflammatory conditions effect these in a different way.
Therefore this study proposes to assess the basic cognitive function of patients who have been diagnosed with the neuroinflammatory disorders. We will use a simple tool on an iPad to test cognition as well as some pen and paper questionnaires to screen for emotional well-being. This may guide us to whether routine baseline cognitive and mood assessment would help in the long term management of such patients and whether such a tool is feasible in clinical practice.
