Research summary
Most people suffering from COVID-19 manage at home with mild-moderate symptoms, calling NHS 111 if not managing. Little is known about the usual time course and relationship between symptoms, breathlessness and finger pulse oximetry in this group. However, finger pulse oximetry is always undertaken if the person accesses medical care. We would like to know symptoms and oximetry of people self-treating at home, during the course of their illness and discover if there is any relationship. We wonder if there is evidence of relative progressive deoxygenation in people self -reporting breathlessness or other symptoms or not, and the level of this variation.\nLastly, people using a home oximeter will be asked, do they find it useful, reassuring, or anxiety provoking?\n We therefore want to recruit 50 patients from our practice to fill in a symptom diary including finger pulse oximetry for the 14 days of their COVID-19 illness as an observational study. We know some GP practices are loaning oximeters to selected patients and hope to offer some insight into a cohort (first 50) of patients presenting early with mild -moderate COVID-19 symptoms, either directly to their GP practice or recruited by text message.
