  • Research summary

This project is a national survey of ambulance service users who received triage and advice over the telephone from the ambulance service, otherwise known as ’hear and treat’ service users. It seeks to answer the question ’How do service users evaluate their experience of hear and treat services?’ through the use of a questionnaire administered over the telephone that will include questions on a range of different patient experience domains. This survey forms a new component of the National Patient Survey Programme commissioned by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and addresses the aspect of patient experience when using ’hear and treat’ services.

The project includes distinct elements: development of the questionnaire, to ensure it is valid and robust in content; sampling of service users by each ambulance trust; field work of the survey by a specialist survey fieldwork agency; and finally analysis and reporting of results.

This information is important to the public as no national survey in this area has previously been run before, hence a gap in current user reported experience. The results of such a survey will be used for performance measurement, both nationally and locally, to drive improvement in services across ambulance trusts.
