Data collection arrangements
The purpose of the national GIST biobank is to support research into gastrointestinal stromal tumours with the overall aim of improving diagnostic accuracy, identify new drug targets and develop new tests to predict or monitor response to treatment. Samples are obtained from patients as part of their routine care and only after informed consent. Donors have the right to withdraw consent at any time after the samples have been collected. Samples and data are stored in secure locations in the Royal Marsden Hospital but only released after approval by an independent access committee. No data is released to research teams which could identify the donor.
Research programme
Samples stored in the GIST biobank can be obtained for research by teams based anywhere in the world. However, donors will be asked if they would want their samples to be retained in the UK. Research projects include those aimed at increasing our understanding of the causes of gastrointestinal stromal tumours, improving the accuracy of diagnosis and improving the ways in which diseases can be treated. Details of the current projects supported by the GIST biobank are given on the GIST support UK web site (http://www.gistsupportuk.com/humantissue.htm)
