  • Research summary

Individuals with an intellectual disability are known to be more likely to experience traumatic events yet there is a lack of trauma-focused research in this population. Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) is a psychological intervention which was designed to treat traumatic stress. NET is recommended by the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Guidelines for the treatment of traumatic stress in adults and children, however there are currently no NICE guidelines for treating trauma in an individual with an intellectual disability. Recent research has been conducted to adapt the NET protocol for this population. However, it has not yet been tested in practice.
This study aims to explore whether the adapted NET protocol is acceptable and feasible within an intellectual disability population. Up to six individuals with an intellectual disability will be recruited to take part in this intervention and their carer. Participants will be invited to complete outcome measures throughout the study to provide information related to their psychological well-being, and symptoms of post-traumatic stress to explore potential effectiveness of this intervention. Change processes will be recorded, and participants will be interviewed at the end of the intervention to gather feedback on their experiences. Participants’ carers will also be recruited to provide informant questionnaires.
The study will be funded by the University of Nottingham. The results from this study will add to the evidence base exploring traumatic stress and psychological interventions to treat individuals with an intellectual disability. It will indicate whether the adapted protocol is acceptable and feasible for the population, or whether further adaptations are warranted. This will provide rationale for further research and replication.
