Research summary
NAPS is a study of patients' and healthcare professionals' experiences and opinions of ways to prevent people who have survived a stroke from having a second stroke or other problems such as a heart attack. The study will use focus groups as the main method of data collection. It will be guided by an approach know as 'grounded theory'. This approach seeks to build and develop themes from the discussions and responses of the participants of the focus groups. Additionally, the researchers will explore with both stoke survivors and healthcare professionals their thoughts on how acceptable new ideas such as using single pill combination tablets are to them. This means combining more than one medication in a single tablet, which reduces the number of tablets a patient takes each day.
The focus groups will be carried out in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. A total of 16 participants (8 patients and 8 healthcare professionals) will be recruited for the focus groups.
Stroke survivors will be approached by the research team as members of their clinical care team to take part in the study. Primary and secondary health care professionals will be approached through professional networks and as members of special interest groups.
The results of this study will form a peer reviewed journal publication and may inform the direction of future clinical research into co-morbidity management after a stroke.
