  • Research summary

This study will test whether we can adapt and use a 6 month programme from the United States called “The Nutrition and Physical Activity Self Assessment for Child Care” (NAP SACC). Goals of the programme are to improve the nutritional quality of food, amount of physical activity, staff-child interactions and policies. We will change NAP SACC and test whether we can work with child care providers to make the environments healthier. Child care providers in North Somerset and Cardiff will be invited to take part in the study if they provide lunch to children aged 2-4. The providers will include day nurseries, private nursery schools, maintained nurseries, Children’s Centres with nurseries and pre-schools.

This project has 2-phases. In Phase 1 we will adapt and develop NAP SACC over 6 months. In Phase 2 we will test NAP SACC in 6 child care providers chosen at random compared to 6 other providers. In Phase 1 changes may include the wording, examples, tailoring self-assessment and standards to comply with UK policy on physical activity and nutrition and developing NAP SACC to involve parents. We will change NAP SACC with a Health Visitor, The Wales Healthy and Sustainable Preschool Scheme member of staff, a child care provider manager and dietician. Changes will be informed by 6 focus groups with child care providers; health professionals (Health Visitors and Wales Healthy and Sustainable Preschool Scheme Coordinators); and Local Authority staff. Also interviews with approximately 20 parents of children aged 2-4. We will work with the Professor from the USA who created NAP SACC. After making changes we will try out the materials and ask for feedback from child care provider staff and Health Visitors. The intervention will be further refined before being used in Phase 2. A separate ethics application will be submitted for Phase 2.
