  • Research summary

Patient Related Outcome Measures (PROM) are currently being used throughout Orthopaedic surgery to assess patient outcome post-surgery. PROMs collect information on the effectiveness of care delivered to NHS patients as perceived by the patients themselves. Current PROMS used for Total hip and knee replacements are the Oxford Hip and Knee Scores. There is doubt, however, about the usefulness of these scoring systems for assessment of younger, higher demand patients undergoing hip and knee replacements due to their simple pain and function related questions Younger, higher demand patients try to get back to higher levels of activity such as sport, running or swimming and these activities are not covered on currently used outcome scores.

MYMOP, Measure Yourself Medical Outcome Profile, is a patient-generated, or individualised, outcome questionnaire created at the University of Bristol. It has been validated and utilised in many branches of medicine and is applicable to all patients who present with symptoms which can be physical, emotional or social. It is brief and simple to administer and asks open questions that allows a patient centred approach to their outcome measures.

We would like to use MyMOPs to assess Patient Related outcome post Total Hip Replacements (THR) and Total Knee Replacements (TKR). In this study, we plan to validate the MyMOPs questionnaire for use in THR and TKR patients. If it is shown to be a valid tool then we would plan to utilise it in all THR and TKR patients.
