Research summary
The proposed study is part of a wider programme called RE-STAR (Regulating Emotions - Strengthening Adolescent Resilience). In RE-STAR we are trying to understand the way people with a diagnosis of ADHD and/or autism manage their emotions in the face of day-to-day stresses and hassles, particularly in school. This is important because we also know that emotion regulation (ER) problems in young people with ADHD and/or autism increase the risk of adolescent depression. The overall goal of RE-STAR, therefore, is to find ways to help young people with a diagnosis of ADHD and/or autism to better manage their emotions and so reduce the likelihood of developing depression during adolescence.
Work package 3 of RE-STAR, My Emotions and Me Over Time (MEMO), aims to better understand what factors contribute to the development of depression during adolescence in neurodivergent young people (NYP). To this end it will chart the emergence of depression from age 12 to 16 years as a function of neurodivergent traits. To do this, we will administer questionnaires to 600 young people. They will be recruited through mainstream schools and NHS clinics.
RE-STAR is a four year programme. My Emotions and Me Over Time (MEMO) will be completed over a 24-month period.
