  • Research summary

The purpose of the present study is to develop and validate a music questionnaire appropriate to measure the degree cochlear implant (CI) users engage with music in everyday life. The study will last approximately 1.5 years and will consist of three parts:

    Part 1. Focus groups.
Items for the new questionnaire will be generated from focus group discussions with adult CI users on everyday music experiences and the importance of music in life. They will also be adapted from previous unvalidated questionnaires following evaluation from the participants. Participants will be recruited from the University of Southampton Auditory Implant Service (USAIS) and through the National Cochlear Implant Users Association (NCIUA).

    Part 2. Online Survey.
The set of questionnaire items developed in part 1 will be reviewed by a panel of experts. Professionals in the field of audiology, music therapy and/or experts in any other field related to CIs will be approached through the British Association of Music Therapy (BAMT), through implant centers in the UK and through available-online mailing lists and will take part in an online survey where they will have to evaluate the format and the content of the questionnaire.

    Part 3. Questionnaire administration.
Finally, after validation by professionals, the questionnaire will be administered to adult CI users recruited as in part 1, and normal-hearing (NH) adults recruited from the University of Southampton for data collection and further validation.

The project is funded by the University of Southampton.
