Research summary
The aim of this study is to implement research-grade MRI scanning within routine NHS practice. At present, clinical practice is based around qualitative reporting of scan changes, such as brain shrinkage in dementia. The opportunity exists now to undertake high resolution MRI scanning with little in the way of extra scan time, which will enable quantification of brain change. Such quantification will improve diagnostic accuracy. Furthermore, it is possible to use MRI scanning to look at additional brain changes, such as alterations in functional connectivity, which have been shown in many research studies to be more sensitive to disease but which are not currently used for clinical purposes.\nWe have already shown is an ethics-approved feasibility study that implementation of research-quality scans within NHS practice is feasible. We now wish to implement this on a wider scale and as a long term endeavour, with a view to future improvement of clinical management.
