  • Research summary

This research will focus on developing and delivering a measure of restricted activity, to detect a general decline in health in older adults with lots of chronic conditions. The overall goal is to develop an early warning signal for decline in older adults with multimorbidity. This study aims to develop the measure associated with this, and the delivery method.
The research will follow on from a literature review, and it will take place with patients, carers, and healthcare professionals, asking them background and opinion questions about restricted physical activity.
The project will be guided by patients. The phase 1 interview answers, along with an earlier literature review will help form the basis for choosing which measure of restricted activity to use and developing an appropriate delivery method for it.
Phase 2 will be co-production between the researchers, patients, carers, and healthcare workers process to develop an acceptable model to capture restricted activity in older adults.
Phase 3 will be testing this model at home with patients.
If successful, this ‘general’ measure intends to reduce the amount of everyday monitoring a patient is expected to do for each of their different conditions.

The project will be guided by a patient and public involvement (PPI) panel. The interview answers will help form the basis for choosing a measure of restricted activity and developing an appropriate delivery method for it.
Co-production between the researchers, patients, carers and healthcare professionals will be conducted in an iterative process to develop an acceptable prototype.
The ultimate aim is to develop an early warning signal for decline in older adults with multimorbidity. The aims of this study are to develop the measure associated with this and an appropriate delivery method.
