  • Research summary

Motivational interviewing is a psychological treatment that aims to help people cut down on alcohol misuse. Trained personnel delivering the treatment must express apathy, support self efficacy, roll with resistance and develop discrepancy to help the patient with their addiction or substance misuse. I wish to look at the effectiveness of motivational interviewing, in new patient referrals with alcohol misuse, by using the readiness to change questionnaire. The questionnaire is designed to find at what stage of change the individual is at, pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action and maintenance.

New referral patients at the Mcrobin Centre, RCH, will be asked to fill in a readiness to change questionnaire at their initial assessment. They will then be seen in clinic, over my project period, where motivational interviewing will be used during these consultations. I will then repeat the questionnaire after they have had a set number of consultations or after a set period of time. The results of the questionnaire will then be compared to look at the effectiveness of motivational interviewing in new referral patients by assessing any difference in stage of change. There are between 80-90 new patient referrals each month, with a DNA rate of around 30%, and a clinic takes place each week which should allow me to gain a reasonable number of patients to carry out the questionnaire on.

I expect that with the use of motivational interviewing in consultations with patients will show a progression through the stages of change and I expect that the progression will be variable from patient to patient.
