Research summary
This is a qualitative, exploratory research project that will use semi−structured interviews to gather information from mothers on neonatal units, regarding their experience of support of breast milk feeding practices on a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). It is part of a wider study that is developing and evaluating a breast milk feeding e learning module for neonatal unit staff. One of the aims of the study is to explore the variation in mothers’ attitudes who have babies that have differing medical backgrounds. The study aims to interview between six and ten mothers as this should provide sufficient variation in participants to allow for contrasting opinions. The potential participants will be identified through having a baby admitted to the neonatal unit during the period of time that the intervention is being evaluated. Only those mothers who have chosen to breast milk feed their baby will be eligible for recruitment. Purposive sampling will be used in order to identify a breadth of both clinical backgrounds of babies and to represent a range of age, experience and ethnicity of mothers.
