Research summary
Bariatric surgery involves a shared decision making process between surgeon and patient. The lifelong and nutritional implications of bariatric surgery are varied and vast and the importance of patients understanding this process and its impact on them cannot be under-estimated. This project proposes a randomised controlled trial of a Massive Open Online Course in the shared decision making processes in comparison to traditional consent process in a single unit on patient recall and shared decision making satisfaction. Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) exist as a disruptor in education. They are defined as free online courses which can be accessed by anyone at any time. They provide short courses to a large unrestricted and undifferentiated number of students, on a flexible basis on a wide variety of subjects. Courses are considered more democratic than traditional higher education courses as they are more inclusive, largely have no pre-requisites and usually free of charge from a range of higher education institutions. MOOCs have been under-utilised in patient education and the aims of this project are to try and explore MOOC utilisation in both improving patient education and bolstering the shared decision making process.
