Research summary
Suicide is a global problem impacting groups in society differently with men in mid-life being at a heightened risk. Although we know that previous suicide attempts largely influence future suicide, we know very little about how memories of a suicide attempt can affect an individual. It is reasonable to assume that memories have a range of emotional impacts on an individual, from being experienced as traumatic or being reflected on as a turning point in someone’s life. It is vital to explore the nature of memories of suicide attempts as this could provide crucial knowledge and understanding that can inform prevention strategies and practice, ultimately saving lives.
This study will investigate the high-risk group of men in mid-life (45-64 years) who have attempted suicide within the past five years who are under the care of a Home-Based Treatment Team (HBTT). HBTT provide intensive support for individuals who are experiencing a mental health crisis living in the community. The aim of this study is to explore the nature of memories of the suicide attempt as they are experienced during everyday life. Participants will be asked to fill out a diary over a two-week period to log naturally occurring memories and record some details about the memory, such as how vivid it felt. The information collected from the diaries will guide an individual interview to explore further the nature of the suicide attempt memory and the impact on the individual. The interview data will be analysed, involving creating themes which will represent shared meaning from the data regarding the nature of suicide attempt memories. The research is being sponsored by Lancaster University.
