Research summary
What are the current models of care, and the resources needed to support them, for the management of HIV in primary care in the UK to inform development of optimal models for people living with HIV?
HIV is becoming classified as a long term chronic condition as treatments and life expectancy improve. There is an increasingly appropriate role for the involvement of non-HIV specialists in the monitoring and management of this stable, ageing population of people with HIV. Historically, HIV care was delivered from specialist centres with little formal involvement of primary care. However, as a result of local context and service user needs , there has been a growth in different primary care models for people with HIV across the country. Within this project, we aim to describe these models to inform recommendations that will support the development of optimal models of care for people living with HIV. Over the next 3 months we will speak directly to around 40 key people involved in service delivery. This will include GPs, Nurses, Specialist consultants, commissioners and people from the charity sector. An internet forum discussion will also take place to get a wider opinion of GPs.REC name
