Research summary
Babies born very preterm (<32 weeks) and others with major health problems are admitted to neonatal care immediately following their birth. The care they receive can be classified into three different levels: intensive care, high dependency care and standard care. Each level of care has costs and consequences associated with it, both clinical and financial.
The overall aim of this project is to investigate neonatal care pathways. First, a statistical model will be developed to allow the prediction of the time a baby will spend in each level of neonatal care based on their characteristics. Second, the care given by different neonatal networks (groups of units which together provide the full range of neonatal services) will be compared to identify inequalities in care and these differences will be examined to aid the fair allocation of resources. Finally, the economic costs will be used to compare the allocation of funding between neonatal networks.
