  • Research summary

Patients often have to take laxatives to clean the bowel before an investigation. We are interested in how these work and whether taking the dose all at once or in divided doses will make a difference. We are also interested in how this bowel cleansing alters the gut bacteria and gut function over time. We plan to use our novel MRI techniques to demonstrate how doses of a preparation designed to clean the bowel alter small and large bowel water content and transit in healthy volunteers. This experimental model is comparable to an episode of acute diarrhoea, therefore this study will also improve our understanding of the effects of diarrhoea on bowel physiology. Following this, we will be recruiting patients who has constipation, who previously do not respond to a laxative, and apply a simplified version of the above study to assess the participant'small bowel water content and how they respond to the bowel cleansing agent.
